BREATHING EXERCISES

Breathing is one of the most difficult things we do in society today.  The majority of the population is considered to be very shallow breathers (meaning we take small breaths in, never filling our lungs up with air). This leads to an excess build up of carbon dioxide (a gaseous waste product made from metabolism). We eliminate up to 70% of our acid through our lungs.  When we do not eliminate this acid, our body’s metabolic systems start to get under a lot of stress (kidneys, pH buffering system, our blood, etc.).  Oxygen is vital to our system, the more we have, the better we feel and the healthier we are.  This is because our body can eliminate toxins easier, help reduce stress and increase fat reduction.

Exercise one:

  • Start by blowing all the air out that you can and when you can’t blow out anymore make a thrusting breath out to empty all the air in the lungs.

  • Close your mouth, open your eyes as wide as you can, flare your nostrils, breath in as fast and forcibly as you can (you should be making a lot of noise).  When you can’t get anymore in, open your mouth and take one big last breath in.  Hold the air in for 7 seconds.

  • Open your mouth and forcibly blow out all the air and start rolling your stomach in and up.  Hold the air out for 7 seconds.

  • You can do this technique on its own, while exercising or stretching (breath held in on the stretch or easy part of exercise and blowing out on the release of stretch or hard part of exercise).

Exercise two:

  • Start by taking a slow deep breath in while counting to four.

  • When you get to four, hold your breath in while counting to four.

  • When you get to four, start blowing your breath out while counting to four.

  • When you get to four, hold your breath out for a count of four.

  • You can alter patterns of breathing (nose one time, mouth the next time, any combination of the two).

Do the above exercises through out the day as often as you can and feel the difference.

When you first begin, you could get light headed. This is from the body getting more oxygen than it’s ever had in the past.  This will subside after a few times.
